Golden Anniversary 1959 - 2009
Washington County Historical Society
Annual Membership Drive & Dinner
Please mark your calendar for Monday, April 13, at 6:00 pm. That's the starting time for the 50th Anniversary/annual meeting of your Washington County Historical Society - at the Brighton Community Center, 101 E. Washington St., Brighton, IA.
Here are four big reasons for you to attend:
Much of our past year's work has focused on preserving and protecting our historic treasures. The restoration of Walnut School and Red Brick School have been completed. The Conger house Museum, repository of the Society's artifacts, photos and documents, still requires attention. During 2007, with a grant from the Washington County Riverboat Foundation, replaced the entire roof of the Conger House. In 2008, restoration of the den began - new paint, refinished floor, and upgrading of the electrical wiring. Restoration efforts this year will focus on safety and security projects, completing the new electrical system throughout the museum with improved outside security lighting and alarms. To make Conger House usable year - round, we need to install a new central heating and air conditioning system.
Your Board of Directors is exploring new ideas for programming and community outreach that will appeal to more local and area residents than ever. That includes those who want to know more about our county's unique and interesting history - and even more importantly, those willing to help us preserve it.
In this, our 50th year, we believe your Historical Society is off to a good start, but we need to gain new energy and momentum. Please join us in Brighton April 13 to help make that happen -- and bring a friend or neighbor we can sign up as a new member before dinner!
