Red Brick School
Red Brick School is located two miles south of Washington on W47 and W55. The Red Brick School District was formed March 27, 1877 and was used until May 8, 1960. Jim Wood purchased the school on April 27, 2000 and donated it to the Washington County Historical Society on January 8, 2006.
It is a well-known landmark in Washington County and remembered for the Red Brick Rhythm Band which performed at many public functions including the Pella Tulip Festival. The band also appeared on WOC television.
With the peak number of 12,623 county schoolhouses in operation, Iowa had more than any other state. Nine solid brick schools remained by 1998.
